Eating out on Aachener Strasse and at Rudolfplatz.
Updated on
Rudolfplatz is one of the busiest squares in central Cologne. This is where the Ring meets Aachener Strasse, and the Belgian Quarter begins just to the north. If you want to eat out here, you have plenty of cuisines within a short walk. This guide shows how the area works, how best to get there and what to expect at remos at the start of Aachener Strasse.
Where exactly is it?
Rudolfplatz is the big junction where Aachener Strasse meets Cologne's ring road. The Hahnentorburg, one of the city's medieval gates, stands on the square. From here Aachener Strasse runs west out of the city centre.
North of Aachener Strasse lies the Belgian Quarter, with its bars, cafés and small shops around Brüsseler Platz. It is popular for strolling by day and for going out at night.
How to get there
The tram is easiest: Rudolfplatz stop is served by lines 1 and 7 above ground and lines 12 and 15 below ground, so you can get there from almost anywhere in the city without a detour.
By car, the city centre is often busy in the evening. If you come as a group, the tram is usually quicker and nobody has to think about driving afterwards.
What makes the area good for eating out
Around Rudolfplatz and Aachener Strasse, restaurants, bars and pubs sit close together. That makes the area ideal for evenings that start with dinner and carry on at the bar.
The downside: on Fridays and Saturdays the good tables go early. If you want to eat at a particular time, book ahead.
